Papier-mâché is a French term that means “chewed paper”. It is a technique used to create sculptures, masks, and other three-dimensional objects by layering paper strips or pulp over a form and then allowing it to dry and harden. Even though I can create papier-mâché from scratch, I prefer to use figurines and masks made by third parties and focus on decorative rather than technical aspects.

To decorate figurines, I’m using tissue paper and beautifully patterned napkins. Even though my figurines have an obviously recognizable shape (like a cat, a bug, a pig, or a tree) I’m not trying to recreate realistically looking animals; instead, I’m creating a modern vintage look that forms my unique style.

Papier-mâché is a fun and versatile medium that allows for endless creativity and experimentation, and it’s a great way to create unique and personalized sculptures and objects.
